Ecotourism Australia was formed in 1991 as an incorporated non-profit organisation, and is the peak national body for the ecotourism and sustainable tourism industry.

Ecotourism Australia and its subsidiary Sustainable Tourism Australia own and manage four certification programs for the Australian tourism industry; ECO certification, Respecting Our Culture (ROC) certification, Climate Action certification and EcoGuide certification.
